Reaching the heights – CH achieves 1st National title 05!

April 15, 2005

14 Apr 05 (Thu) – Toa Payoh Sports Hall

A sense of excitement and trepidation swept through us as we disembarked from the school bus at Toa Payoh Indoor Sports Hall on that fateful Thursday 14 April 2005. After all, this was a momentous event for our school – we have never reached the finals of national schools basketball competition, much less win the national schools title.

Catholic High had a torrid start, falling behind 0-9 in the first quarter.

As we entered the hall, we were greeted with rapturous roars of support by supporters for their teams playing in the girls’ final prior to our game. This gave us a sense of the playing intensity for our final match. It soon proved to be with the streaming in of all our school supporters, led by Mr Lee Hak Boon our principal.

i
Forward Yap Ching Poh was a key player for Catholic High with his energetic drives. Here he powered his way to a lay up for another 2 points.

We endured a nervy start, in spite of the rigorous preparation for the final and the inspiring team talks given to us by our teachers, Mr Ian Chew and Mr Goh Kee Yong and our coach, Mr Oh Thian Soon. Our players were not shooting or passing well, and soon we found ourselves 0 – 9 down. Our opponents, Unity Secondary School, displayed why they were the favorites for the title by settling down quickly and attacking the basketball relentlessly. We ended the first quarter 6 – 13 down.

Huge battle for rebounds with Unity Sec having the height advantage.

Staring at defeat in the face, we determined within ourselves not to give in easily. The second quarter saw a renewed effort by our team and we made a remarkable comeback, outscoring them 11 points to end the half leading with a score of 23 – 19. Lim Fang Ching, who eventually emerged the Most Valuable Player of the tournament and led all scores with 28 points, contributed two crucial 3 point baskets in the second quarter.

Fang Ching was unstoppable as he top scored with 28 points to earn the MVP award.

We started the second half as we finished the first, by applying a stifling team defense on our opponents. Every ball was chased down and every shot harried. We displayed good understanding and great commitment in all our set plays to constantly frustrate our opponents. Our scurrying defense eventually took a toll on our opponents, who began to give away numerous fouls. The nail in the coffin was the dismissal of their key controlling guard due to his fifth foul. They never recovered from that and we subsequently held on to win the game by a comfortable score of 59 – 50.

Forward Billy Lang also contributed with a few key rebounds.

Everyone was ecstatic with the win and our supporters could not stop cheering for some time. After the prize presentation, the most memorable part for me was the singing of the school song by everyone. All stood in attention as we sang with pride, and the school spirit was definitely demonstrated evidently. As I went home cradling my championship trophy affectionately in my hands, I knew I will always cherish this moment for the rest of my life.

Centre Yong Wei missed 2 last second free throws, but it didn’t matter as Catholic High still ran out 59-50 victors.
