The match started in a fashion that was to set the tone for the rest of the match. Catholic High scored the first seven points before Raffles replied with four of their own. After that, the Catholic High team employed suffocating man-to-man defense to ensure that points by the RI team would be at a premium. The first quarter ended 16-7 in Catholic High’s favor.

In the second quarter, RI found themselves suddenly facing a full court zone trapping defense which they struggled to cope with. They ended the quarter 4-20 down and the half 11-36 down. That effectively ended any hopes they had of winning the match.
