Losing out on a place in the C Division final last year proved to be a huge motivating factor in this year’s inter-school basketball competition for captain Jonathan Cher, 2-10 of the Catholic High school C Division basketball team.

“I remembered training straight after the losing in the third and fourth placing till 7pm that evening. It hurt. We vowed to perform better the next year and win the national title,” he explained.

And win they did, in impressive fashion as well. They overcame their opponents Jurong Secondary School 80-47 in the finals played at Jurong East Sports Complex on the afternoon of Tuesday 29 August 2006. Both had enjoyed an unbeaten run en route to the final.

The Catholic High team, attired in red, started the game brightly, scoring seven points before Jurong Sec replied with two of their own. Play was characterized by a stifling defence applied by the Catholic High players on their opponents. This forced numerous turnovers and points off turnovers as a result. The height advantage enjoyed by the team in red was unmistakable as they enjoyed the lion’s share of rebounds and blocked shots, restricting the other team to few attempts at the basket. The first quarter quickly ended 15-5 in Catholic High’s favour.

The second quarter saw a comeback of sorts mounted by the Jurong team. Refusing to be fold easily, they scored consecutive baskets through employing to a tight man-to-man defence and even pulled to within four points of Catholic High, trailing 21-25 at one point.

That was as close as they got. The Catholic High team managed to retain their composure to extend the lead to 35-21 by the end of the first half.

The second half followed the same script with the Jurong team unable to effectively penetrate Catholic High’s defence on a consistent basis. This resulted in latter scoring many points off the fast break. Coupled with some accurate shooting from their forwards and guards, the Catholic High team quickly built on their lead to finish the third quarter 56-33 up, effectively sewing up the match.

The fourth quarter played itself out as a formality, more so as Jurong suffered the loss of two key players, one due to injury and the other fouling out. Catholic High proceeded to wrap up the match, outscoring their opponents a whopping 12 points to end the game 80-47.

The match was also a special one for Wong Kam Seng, a Secondary 1 forward in the team. He scored 17 points and pulled down numerous rebounds to garner the Most Valuable Player award. Other players also played starring roles in Catholic High’s win, including forward James Hong and guard Jason Pok, pouring in 19 points and 15 points for the team respectively.

Said Mr Ian Chew, teacher-in-charge of the team:

“The team truly deserved the result as they had put in much hard work, including training up to six days a week for the competition. Credit must also go to everyone involved in the success of the team, including the principal, teachers, coaches and parents of the boys. Thank God too for keeping everyone focused, healthy and injury free throughout the tournament.”
