Yeong Wooi’s good all-round performance in the adidas selection garnered him a place in the camp!

Imagine playing in front of NBA coaches and scouts. Or having NBA players show you their moves up close and personal. That’s what Catholic High 1.96m centre Khaw Yeong Wooi can boast about when he goes to Shanghai from 18-24 May for the adidas Nations Camp as Malaysia’s sole representative!

As part of Team “Asia Blue”, he finds himself training with the best U18 players from Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan and of course our very own Singaporean players Lin Shengyu and Calvin Chia, both from Hwa Chong Institution, while being coached by Bob Weiss, ex-Head coach of Seattle Supersonics. Guest players for the camp are NBA superstars Mo Williams and Desmond Mason, both from the Milwaukee Bucks.

I caught up with him for an interview.

Tell me about yourself.
I started playing basketball since I was 13 years of age and came to Catholic High when I was 14 years old. I am currently in Secondary Four and will be taking my O level examinations at the end of the year. I am also playing for the U18 Johor Baru team in the state competition.

Catholic High wishes to send a team to YOG! Then again, why not?

April 28, 2008

CNA – A rather interesting article appeared in Channel News Asia today. It also featured a picture of Jabez speaking to interviewers (see above).

It says that Catholic High is “training basketball team to compete in YOG 2010″! It further claims that “Catholic High School aims to field a basketball team at the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in 2010″.

Wow… although we at Catholic High are rather flattered by the article (as well as the thought others might have that our school team can actually represent Singapore!!!)… we would like to take this opportunity to clarify that we have been misrepresented.

Our only purpose in training with regards to the YOG is so that some of our players may prove to be good enough to be selected by the national basketball selectors. We respect their authority in basketball and would do whatever we can to help them work towards the success of the YOG.

Then again, if we prove good enough to send an entire team to the YOG, why not?

In any case, BAS, here’s wishing that you would find great players and have a successful 1st YOG team result!

PS:We rather enjoyed the article though:)

22 April (Tue) – Toa Payoh Sports Hall

Catholic High chose the right moment to peak with a convincing 99-65 win over a previously unbeaten Jurong team in the B Division basketball final. Captain Jabez Su (#4) may have led all scores with 32 points in the game but it was Catholic High’s point guard Dominic Lim (#10) who garnered the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award with his astute and cool control of the game!

Catholic High showed their winning intent early, finishing with a sizzling 34-19 first quarter lead. Forward Wong Kam Seng (#11, CH) drove repeatedly into the paint, using his speed and height advantage to score 10 points in the opening run. Jabez also showed a sure shooting touch to add 13 points, including two from beyond the 3-point arc.

Jurong at this time was just restricted to outside shooting, though Jurong’s captain Weiyan (#4), Wenjie (#5) and Randy Ng (#7) was spot on behind the 3-point line as well in the first quarter.

Catholic High’s Jabez Su top scored with 27 points, mostly on his trademark fastbreak lay ups!

15 Apr (Tue) -- Singapore Basketball Centre

A surprisingly lacklustre Seng Kang Sec meekly surrendered the semi final game to Catholic High 47-75.

The talented Seng Kang team, consisting of three national youth players, never recovered from going 0-7 down within the first 2 minutes of the game and went on to lose all three quarters to a well-oiled Catholic High offensive machine. They managed to eke out a 16-15 win in the fourth quarter, but not before the entire Catholic High bench had been substituted in the game.

CH qualifies for semi finals with hard fought win over Woodlands Ring

April 11, 2008

a
Jabez Su (black) scored 14 points for his Catholic High team. Crediting the strong Woodlands Ring defense later, he remarked, “I was marked out of the game.”

11 April (Fri) – Singapore Basketball Centre

The stakes were high. Woodlands Ring stands to be eliminated at the quarter final stage as if they had lost the game. And the way they started demonstrated how they really wanted to clinch a place in the semi final.

Jumping to a quick 6-0 start, they stunned Catholic High with their aggressive play early. But Catholic High clawed back to lead 18-11 after the first quarter and extended the lead to 31-19 at the half.

But Woodlands Ring, known for their fighting spirit, came right back in the third quarter. They pressured the Catholic High players into turnovers. Jabez Su (#4, CH) in particular, hardly had a whiff of the ball as a Woodlands Ring player stuck closely to him. Helped by some sloppy play by the Catholic High forwards, Woodlands Ring gained some advantage by closing the gap to 34-40 at the end of the third.
