CH outmuscles Jurong for 1st C Division title!

Losing out on a place in the C Division final last year proved to be a huge motivating factor in this year’s inter-school basketball competition for captain Jonathan Cher, 2-10 of the Catholic High school C Division basketball team.
“I remembered training straight after the losing in the third and fourth placing till 7pm that evening. It hurt. We vowed to perform better the next year and win the national title,” he explained.
And win they did, in impressive fashion as well. They overcame their opponents Jurong Secondary School 80-47 in the finals played at Jurong East Sports Complex on the afternoon of Tuesday 29 August 2006. Both had enjoyed an unbeaten run en route to the final.

The Catholic High team, attired in red, started the game brightly, scoring seven points before Jurong Sec replied with two of their own. Play was characterized by a stifling defence applied by the Catholic High players on their opponents. This forced numerous turnovers and points off turnovers as a result. The height advantage enjoyed by the team in red was unmistakable as they enjoyed the lion’s share of rebounds and blocked shots, restricting the other team to few attempts at the basket. The first quarter quickly ended 15-5 in Catholic High’s favour.
The second quarter saw a comeback of sorts mounted by the Jurong team. Refusing to be fold easily, they scored consecutive baskets through employing to a tight man-to-man defence and even pulled to within four points of Catholic High, trailing 21-25 at one point.
That was as close as they got. The Catholic High team managed to retain their composure to extend the lead to 35-21 by the end of the first half.

The second half followed the same script with the Jurong team unable to effectively penetrate Catholic High’s defence on a consistent basis. This resulted in latter scoring many points off the fast break. Coupled with some accurate shooting from their forwards and guards, the Catholic High team quickly built on their lead to finish the third quarter 56-33 up, effectively sewing up the match.
The fourth quarter played itself out as a formality, more so as Jurong suffered the loss of two key players, one due to injury and the other fouling out. Catholic High proceeded to wrap up the match, outscoring their opponents a whopping 12 points to end the game 80-47.
The match was also a special one for Wong Kam Seng, a Secondary 1 forward in the team. He scored 17 points and pulled down numerous rebounds to garner the Most Valuable Player award. Other players also played starring roles in Catholic High’s win, including forward James Hong and guard Jason Pok, pouring in 19 points and 15 points for the team respectively.
The win also marked the first time that the Catholic High basketball team has captured both the B and C Division national titles in the same year.

Said Mr Ian Chew, teacher-in-charge of the team:
“The team truly deserved the result as they had put in much hard work, including training up to six days a week for the competition. Credit must also go to everyone involved in the success of the team, including the principal, teachers, coaches and parents of the boys. Thank God too for keeping everyone focused, healthy and injury free throughout the tournament.”

CH beats RI to recapture SZ C division title 06

Despite the close attention of the opposing Raffles Institution players, centre Chong Ming Xuan scored 11 points for the Catholic High team to lead the team to an absorbing 70-27 win over their traditional rival in a one-sided contest. They met in the final of the South Zone C Division basketball competition at Delta Sports Complex on 26 July (Wed) after emerging unbeaten from their earlier qualifying round of matches.

To the loud cheers from the Catholic High supporters, he evaded numerous traps set for him by his opponents and scored with a variety of moves. One of his highlight moves was a lay up which he executed at the height of the rim, which looked as if he was about to dunk the basketball through the hoop!
Besides him, there were several other players in scoring figures. James Hong, 1-9 scored 8 points including two 3-pointers and Dominic Lim, also from 1-9, added crucial assists while contributing 11 points. Jason Pok, 2-9, also wowed the crowd good defensive play and scoring 7 points, including a spin-around lay up move which brought cheers from the crowd. Goh Kong Tat, another centre grabbed 6 points while forward Wong Kam Seng led all scorers with 14 points.

The match started in a fashion that was to set the tone for the rest of the match. Catholic High scored the first seven points before Raffles replied with four of their own. After that, the Catholic High team employed suffocating man-to-man defense to ensure that points by the RI team would be at a premium. The first quarter ended 16-7 in Catholic High’s favor.
In the second quarter, RI found themselves suddenly facing a full court zone trapping defense which they struggled to cope with. They ended the quarter 4-20 down and the half 11-36 down. That effectively ended any hopes they had of winning the match.

The rest of the match proceeded in like fashion with tight defense by the Catholic High team restricting scoring opportunities for their opponents. The Raffles team tried to mount a valiant comeback at the fourth quarter with a full court trap but eventually still came up short, losing 12-18 in that quarter. The match ended in good spirit with both teams shaking hands and congratulating each other on a game well played.

“This win was sweet revenge after losing to them in the semi finals last year. We will build on this win to prepare for the future matches,” said Jonathan Cher, captain of the school’s lower secondary basketball team.
Added the teacher-in-charge, Mr Ian Chew, “The team, although winning by a big margin, has still much to improve on. I’m sure that all the members will work hard to ensure better team performance in the upcoming National rounds of competition.”

CH pips Serangoon Gardens for 2nd successive B title!

With the clock ticking away in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter, centre Khaw Yeong Wooi chose the best possible moment to shine. Grabbing a rebound, he dribbled up court, evading three defenders along the way to score his third consecutive basket for the team. The Catholic High basketball team then went on to record a thrilling 67-58 win over Serangoon Gardens Secondary School at the finals of the B Division Basketball Inter-school competition held at Toa Payoh Sports Hall on 20 April.


The lead changed hands a few times before Catholic High’s point guard Chiam Hongyao scored a crucial 3-pointer to extend their lead to 58-54. Yeong Wooi then took over in the final stages to lead his team to successfully defend their B Division title.

“This victory is particularly sweet as our boys worked very hard to prepare for the competition during the December school holidays,” remarked Mr Ian Chew, the teacher-in-charge of the school’s basketball team. “Both teams wanted to win badly, but our better composure and fitness were crucial factors resulting in our victory today.”
Added a visibly ecstatic principal Lee Hak Boon, “Credit must go to everyone involved: the teachers, coach and students who have put in so much effort. Our school spirit was also evident today among the supporters, who never stopped cheering for the team even though they were behind.”
Both teams had advanced to the final boasting unbeaten records. Catholic High had beaten Unity Secondary 78-65 and Serangoon Gardens edged out Anglican High 62-60 in their semi-final matches. Unity Secondary eventually finished third while Anglican High took fourth place.
