Catholic High captures a historic 3rd consecutive B 07 title!
April 26, 2007
25 Apr (Wed) – Toa Payoh Sports Hall

A valiant second half comeback by Gan Eng Seng failed to derail Catholic High from achieving a record third consecutive national B title. In the end, Catholic High proved too strong in an exciting 61-50 win over their south zone rival in the B division national final played at Toa Payoh Sports Hall on 25 April.
Catholic High started the better of the two teams, with centre Chong Ming Xuan scoring the first basket after the team collected three straight offensive rebounds. The clear height advantage that the Catholic High players enjoyed certainly added to the ease of their lead as they restricted the Gan Eng Seng team to few shot attempts in the first quarter.
Guards Chiam Hong Yao and Shawn Lim were especially impressive during this period as they combined for a total 17 points, scored mainly through fast breaks. In particular, Shawn Lim missed the chance to complete a rare 4 point play when he was fouled while making a 3-pointer. He missed the subsequent free throw.
Gan Eng Seng started the second quarter determined to keep the score down. By slowing down the game, they managed to affect the momentum of the Catholic High team and kept them from increasing the lead. They were helped by some turnovers committed by the Catholic High players, who were over eager at times to score some points of their own. The half ended with the Catholic High team up by 12 points, leading 37-25 at the break.
Aware of the main threat posed by the Catholic High team, the third quarter saw a change in strategy of the Gan Eng Seng defense in putting bodies on Catholic High’s 1.95m center Khaw Yeong Wooi whenever he has possession of the ball. As soon as Yeong Wooi got the ball in the low post area, he was immediately triple-teamed, forcing him to pass the ball out. This seemed to work as the Catholic High team was restricted to scoring only 14 points in this period. Yet the Gan Eng Seng team failed to capitalize on this defensive success, managing only to score 10 points in the quarter. Six of these points came through centre Clarence Lim shooting jumpers over Yeong Wooi. The third quarter ended with Gan Eng Seng trailing 35-51.
With the game nearing its end, Gan Eng Seng went for broke in the fourth quarter with their players attempting 3 pointers to close the gap. This strategy paid off with their point guard Pek Jia Rong scoring 2 back-to-back spectacular long range shots. That coupled with baskets from Wong Zi Xian (No. 4) and Clarence Lim, enabled Gan Eng Seng to close within 10 points of Catholic High trailing by 45-55. Confidence rattled, coach of Catholic High Raymond Oh immediately called for a time-out.
Coming off the time-out was when Shawn Lim of Catholic High took over the scoring reins. He made two consecutive shots, one from 3 point land to pop the lead back to a comfortable 15 points. Gan Eng Seng’s efforts to catch up after that proved vain as Catholic High eventually ran out 60-51 winners.
Chester Leow, captain of the Catholic High team later complimented his opponents.
“They have certainly improved a great deal since the last time we played them. It was not an easy game for us as their defense made it especially for us to execute our plays. Yet at the same time, I am very proud to be associated with my teammates as we have worked very hard all these years to win three consecutive titles. Thanks too to the principal, teachers and coach for making this possible. This is a great achievement which we will treasure for many years to come!”

Yong Wei dunks to lead team to B division final 07
April 17, 2007
16 Apr 07 (Mon) – Clementi Sports Hall
Dunking the basketball has got to be one of the most spectacular skills in basketball.
Yet to even dunk during an inter school competition match, that’s virtually unheard of. Catholic High’s 1.95m center Khaw Yeong Wooi did just that in a national semi final match against Unity Sec.
Receiving a pass off a fast break from teammate Wong Kam Seng, Yeong Wooi streaked to the basket and downed a thunderous dunk, drawing cheers for the supporters!
“I have regularly practiced dunking during my training sessions. Since there was an opportunity, and with encouragement from my teachers and coach, I simply went for it,” said an unassuming Yeong Wooi.
Catholic High continued to dominate proceedings to win the match with a convincing 60-25 scoreline to qualify for the national basketball final.
CH retains B Div SZ 07 title in resounding win!

8 Mar 07 – Toa Payoh Sports Hall
With a quick spin move, point guard Chiam Hong Yao of the Catholic High School’s basketball team sliced through the entire Gan Eng Seng team defence and got fouled in the process. He then made his one of his two foul shots count to finish the match with a game total of 9 points. Catholic High emerged victorious with an easy 74 – 45 win over Gan Eng Seng Secondary in a B Division South Zone basketball final match played on 8 Mar (Thu) at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall to successfully defend their South Zone title.
Yet it did not seemed that way at the start. Gan Eng Seng began the match the brighter of the two and were more determined and organized in their team play. With some quick passing by their point guard Pek Jia Rong and cool finishing by his teammates, Gan Eng Seng quickly jumped to a 10-4 lead.
Despite being down and obviously not yet suited to the rhythm of the game, Catholic High clawed back into match with some tenacious defending and relied on their 1.95m centre Khaw Yeong Wooi to put some points on the board for the team. He made 2 put backs from under the basket to close the gap to 8-10. More crucially, he drew 2 quick fouls from Gan Eng Seng’s powerful centre Clarence Leong, which resulted in an early exit for him.
This proved to be crucial as the Catholic High team tightened their defence and worked relentlessly through the paint to jump to an 18-10 lead. The Gan Eng Seng team could only manage four more points to end the first quarter with the score standing at 18-14 in Catholic High’s favour.
That was as close as Gan Eng Seng got. Catholic High started the second quarter with renewed vigour and extended their lead through a combination of aggressive pressure man-to-man defence on their opponents. This resulted in numerous turnovers by the harried Gan Eng Seng team and some easy baskets for the defending champions. Their scoring was spread evenly by all five players on the floor and they extended their lead to 39-17 by half-time.
The match was effectively over as a contest as both sides fielded their reserves in the third and fourth quarters as the match played out to its expected conclusion. It finished with a flourish for Catholic High as their skilful playmaker Chiam Hong Yao combined with sharpshooter Shawn Lim to produce some highlight moves to wow the crowd.
Commented Mr Oh Thian Soon, coach of the Catholic High team on the win: “I think our defense was the key in today’s win. We knew our opponents were tired and our players capitalized on this by playing pressure defense on them throughout the game, especially in the last quarter.”
Added Chester Leow, captain of the Catholic High basketball team, “We didn’t start well especially in the first quarter when most of us were feeling quite lethargic. But we did not give up as we were determined to play well and win the title. I sure the entire basketball CCA team will use this South Zone tournament as a springboard to improve our performances for the coming National rounds.”
